AUBURN v FLORIDA STATE -1989 | Sugar Bowl
Date: | Info: 55th Annual Sugar Bowl Classic ~ January 1, 1989
#4 Florida State 13 (Final: 11-1-0, #3)
#7 Auburn 7 (Final: 10-2-0, #8)
On the last play of the game, Florida State's Deion Sanders went head-to-head against All-American Lawyer Tillman. Sanders and his teammates came up winners when he stole a potential touchdown pass in front of Tillman to preserve FSU's 13-7 win in the 55th USF&G Sugar Bowl.
The Seminoles jumped to an early 13-0 lead that could have been even larger had they not botched a fake field-goal attempt from the 2-yard line. FSU built its lead thanks to Miller-Digby Award winner Sammie Smith and a pair of Auburn turnovers. The Tigers' only score was a 20-yard pass from Reggie Slack to Walter Reeves in the second quarter.
