MICHIGAN v AUBURN -1984 | Sugar Bowl
Date: | Info: 50th Annual Sugar Bowl Classic ~ January 2, 1984
#3 Auburn 9 (Final: 11-1-0, #3)
#8 Michigan 7 (Final: 9-3-0, #10)
In a game that epitomized the term "trench warfare," it was the foot of Auburn's Al Del Greco that proved the difference in the Tigers' 9-7 verdict over Michigan before 77,893 fans. Del Greco booted three field goals, the last a 19-yarder for the win with only 23 seconds remaining on the clock.
Auburn's wishbone, despite springing Bo Jackson, the Miller-Digby Award winner, for 130 yards and Lionel James for 83, was throttled by a stingy Wolverine defense. At the same time, Tiger defenders were able to keep pressure on Michigan quarterback Steve Smith, except for an early 63-yard drive capped by his 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
It was 7-0 at the half, and then Del Greco started kicking.
