Florida's Steve Spurrier led the Gators to one of the greatest fourth-quarter rallies in Sugar Bowl history, but Missouri hung on to post a 20-18 win.

Charlie Brown, with 120 yards, lifted the Tigers to a 20-0 lead, scoring on a 10-yard scamper in the second quarter. Earl Denny then caught a Johnny Roland 11-yard pass and Bill Bates added a field goal for a 17-0 halftime lead.

Bates made it 20-0 with a third-quarter FG before Spurrier, the first from a losing team to earn "Most Outstanding" honors, pushed Florida to three touchdowns (passing scores of 22 and 21 yards and sneaking in one from the 2) in nine minutes. Florida tried for two points, unsuccessfully, after all three touchdowns. On the day, Spurrier had 344 yards total offense and 352 passing yards (27-of-45), both Sugar Bowl records at the time.
