Jerome Bettis' three fourth-quarter touchdowns led Notre Dame to a 39-28 win over Florida in what at the time was the highest scoring USF&G Sugar Bowl ever. Bettis, the Miller-Digby Award winner, gained 150 yards on the ground with just 16 carries in helping the Irish upset the third-ranked SEC champion Gators.
A crowd of 76,447 saw Florida and Notre Dame put on a dazzling offensive show, amassing nearly 1,000 yards total offense between them. Gator quarterback Shane Matthews passed for 370 yards on 28-of-58 marksmanship and set a then-Bowl record with 397 yards in total offense.
