OKLAHOMA v PENN STATE -1972 | Sugar Bowl
Date: 12/31/1972 | Info: 39th Annual Sugar Bowl Classic ~ December 31, 1972
#2 Oklahoma 14 (Final: 11-1-0, #2)
#5 Penn State 0 (Final: 10-2-0, #10)
Oklahoma freshman Tinker Owens led the methodical Sooners to a 14-0 win over Penn State on New Year's Eve in the first Sugar Bowl played at night. Owens caught five passes for 132 yards against the Nittany Lions, including one of 27 yards from Dave Robertson for a TD.
Penn State played without its offensive leader John Cappelletti, who was battling the flu, and went against one of the nation's most stingy defenses. The Nittany Lions didn't cross midfield until late in the third quarter, and its only serious scoring threat of the evening ended with a fumble at the OU 19.
