Pittsburgh turned Georgia Tech every way but loose on the field, but Tech capitalized on a controversial pass interference call near the Pitt goal line to score the game's only points.

Tech was operating from the Pitt 32 after recovering a fumble early in the first when the penalty occurred. After the penalty, Wade Mitchell snuck over from the 1, and then Yellow Jacket coach Bobby Dodd turned the game over to his defense, led by the game's "Most Outstanding" player Franklin Brooks.

Twice Tech stopped Pitt with goal-line stands: at the 1-yard line and then at the 5 as the game ended. The Panthers outgained Tech, 311 yards to 142.

Pittsburgh fullback Bobby Grier became the first African-American to play in the Sugar Bowl.
